Prayer Practice (Friday Devotional)

Pray without ceasing.

- 1 Thessalonians 5:17

When Jackie Stiles was a high school sophomore, basketball was her whole life—so she was devastated when she was sidelined by a broken wrist. But she was determined to get back on track and come back from the injury even better than before. So, even as her wrist was still healing, she began a routine that would endure for years: making 1,000 shots per day.

Some days the workout would take as little as 2 hours, often it would take 4 or 5. But with single-minded determination, she took shot after shot, never stopping each day until she’d made—not just taken, but made—1,000. Her routine served her well—when she ended her collegiate career at Southwest Missouri University, she was the highest scoring women’s basketball player of all time.

It’s often said that practice makes perfect, that repetition and routine are the keys to improvement. That’s exactly why, again and again, Scripture implores us to pray regularly, not as an act of desperation but of routine. Communication with God is not something we pull out only in times of crisis, but also in times of calm.

It is through constant, unceasing prayer that you come to know God better and learn to discern His will. Prayer isn’t something just for special occasions—it’s for all occasions. Even if that means 1,000 prayers a day.
